the photograph as object
the work has its origins in a site specific sculptural practice of some 30 years mainly centred around large floor installations. by their very nature these were temporary in duration and the only evidence of their existence is in the photographic record. its this relationship between photography and sculpture that has directly led to the new rould of experimentation and the development od a new practice.
the work presented here proposes ways in which the photography of sculptural objects, can generate works which operate beyond that of simply being a record or transcript. the photo-image becomes a indexical motive for the object and becomes a ‘thing’ in itself. the resulting photoworks emerge as hybrid products, illustrating that once the photo has been seen, the original referent object, can no longer be observed in the same way (benjamin1936). as a result the original sculptural object, no longer present, acts or communicates differently.
